![]() ![]() ![]() The semi-autobiographical vignettes of this new work, originally serialized in Salon, follow the same basic format as the strip: blocks of enthusiastic first-person commentary at the top of each panel, squiggly, childlike-but stylized-drawings and dizzy word-balloon dialogue between the characters. Childhood's cruelties and pleasures, remembered in luminous, unsparing detail, have become the central topic of her work. ![]() This new instalment focuses on narratives that dramatise our deepest concerns about a vengeful ecosystem. ![]() ![]() The British Library’s splendid Tales of the Weird range draws together often neglected stories from the past century and a half, and has already given us themed anthologies on subjects as diverse as Christmas, train travel and mad science. Suspicion of nature, allied to a multiplicity of related fears, has long been embedded in our culture. As activists line the streets to threaten sabotage, as a child preaches to politicians about the com ing catastrophe, as we note shifts in weather patterns and murmur nervous platitudes about the persistence of rain at this time of year, there is a feeling of dread, the awful suspicion that we have left it all too late and that the environment means, quite soon now, to have its revenge. W e live at the present time in mortal fear of the natural world. ![]() ![]() ![]() Otherwise, if you’re a fan of the movie and you absolutely have to have it, you’re probably just as well off purchasing The Bourne Identity Collector’s Edition instead of this. So even if the disc is a redundant release whose only improvement over the other Bourne Identity releases is a pretty cool cover, the sting isn’t so bad should you be tricked into buying it. Every copy purchased comes with a ticket to the soon to be released movie, The Bourne Supremacy. Other mentions: Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity), Liam Hemsworth (The. ![]() All should probably stick to their respective professions and leave the reviewing to semi-professional.Īt least they’re giving you something free. However, overall Jason Bourne acts and thinks like an ISTP. ![]() ![]() The only noticeable differences between this “Extended Edition” and the “Collector’s Edition” are the complete lack of commentary on this disc (a stupid decision since the Collector’s Edition had it), some boring documentaries about fight coordination and the author of the original books, and some new short featurrettes in which Psychologists and CIA Operatives give their review of the film. They throw in a lame Moby music video and a making of featurette. There are a few measly deleted scenes, with an obligatory “play all” function. The rest of the extras are mostly just a rehash of the stuff already released on the original “Collectors Edition” (a term thrown around way to easily on DVD’s these days) that’s been on shelves for some time now. ![]() ![]() ![]() When all hell breaks loose, it's lucky for Skulduggery that he's already dead. Pursued by evil forces intent on recovering a mysterious key, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source - the wisecracking skeleton of a dead wizard. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror, it certainly wasn't fiction. "I know." "And technically, you've already died." "I know that too." "Just so we're clear." Stephanie's uncle Gordon is a writer of horror fiction. Though you don't actually have a heart," she said. "Cross my heart and hope to die." "Okay then. "So you won't keep anything from me again?" He put his hand to his chest. With a pair like this on the case, evil had better watch out. I remembered how he chose his words and the pictures he painted with his engaging, yet simple, descriptions. His words were honest, forthright and just plain accessible. Sledge took notes throughout both campaigns, intending to write a short memoir for his family. ![]() He wanted to become an officer but enlisted to get to battle sooner. It’s a lovely big ‘what if?’ and Binti herself is wonderful. One of the things I love most about science fiction is its thought experiment nature: what would happen if X? If Y were true, how would we evolve? What if Z is out there? Okorafor’s novellas present a space-faring future world from the point of view of a young African girl from a very traditional, grounded, inward-looking people, and then gives her admission to the best university in the universe. Maybe I’ll learn, but it’s doubtful.Īnyhow, I read the Binti books back to back last week, and as a result finally ordered Lagoon (only four years late, I guess it could be worse). I want to know and read everything, but as a result I end up knowing and reading far less than I would if I just got on with it, instead of bouncing about all over the place trying to find out all the things. This dreadful inability to retain stuff frustrates me more than I can say. When people started talking about the Binti novellas I didn’t even connect Okorafor with Lagoon at first. ![]() ![]() I am ashamed to say I then did absolutely nothing about getting or reading it. I was hugely excited at the prospect of a book in which aliens landed in Africa and immediately added it to my list. I first heard of Nnedi Okorafor back in 2014 when I read about her novel Lagoon. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her journey was a page turner and I enjoyed it very much. Her close friends deserved a medal for the “patience of a saint”! I felt so sorry for Christine at times but she had me in stitches too. Her struggles and emotional issues came across very real and were understandable although dying from all of the above became very time consuming. The way she deals with avoiding her broken heart and re-discovering herself and her ability to cope is by inventing questionably illnesses like cancer, AIDS and MS just to name a few, which she is convinced she is dying from. This story is about Christine, who ends up in a situation beyond her control and finds herself a single Mum of two girls going through a divorce and having to adjust to life as a single woman in her forties. It had me laughing out loud at times and cringing the next. Not everyone got along-the Hulk fought with everyone-but working together they could defeat the baddest of Marvel's bad guys, like Loki, Kang the Conqueror, the Masters of Evil, and Immortus. If the Fantastic Four were family, then the Avengers were the co-workers you didn't choose. Right away it was clear this team was different. So Lee and artist Jack Kirby assembled Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor, and the Hulk to create the Avengers. Maddie is a character I fell into step with instantly. ![]() If she wasn't living, am I? Thank you Katie Kacvinsky for making me think about that. It made me think about how much time I spend behind these devices. Watching Maddie's life change, and her story unfold hit really close to home. Don't think that the irony is lost on me that I'm sitting at a computer screen typing this review. Then Justin enters her life and everything is thrown upside down. For a long time Maddie has seen this as the norm, and a happy existence. Constantly plugged in, because that is the best way to stay "safe". In Maddie's world, everyone is trapped behind computer screens. I think what most drew me in about the world that Katie Kacvinsky builds is how close to home it hits.
